Using an Android Tablet for Site Inspections
A larger screen can make descriptions and reports easier to review, but the right inspection device also needs usable photos, comfortable handling and a reliable file workflow. Test the actual tablet on a small project before making it your primary field device.

Confirm compatibility on the device
Site Audit's current minimum Android version is 8.0. Check the Google Play listing on the intended device for installation availability; an operating-system version alone does not establish compatibility with every tablet model or configuration. Google's app compatibility guidance explains why availability can differ between devices.
This guide is a workflow evaluation, not a claim of hands-on testing across tablet models. Install the free app, open it and check the screens in the orientations you intend to use. Confirm that text entry and controls work comfortably with your normal handling arrangement.
Test capture where you will use it
- Take a context photo and a close detail photo under realistic lighting.
- Check focus and useful detail before leaving the item.
- Enter a location, description and caption without relying on a desk.
- Test storage availability and the planned battery routine.
- Confirm that carrying the device fits the site's safe working arrangements.
A large display does not guarantee a better camera. Review the exported photo detail rather than judging only how the preview fills the screen.
Rehearse offline reporting and delivery
After setup, try the intended capture and PDF workflow without a connection. Open the resulting document in a viewer available on the tablet. Test voice entry separately if you plan to use it, because speech-service behaviour can vary by device and language setup.
Reconnect and send a test report through your chosen destination app. Confirm the recipient can open it. Also create a backup and check that you can save a separate copy using your normal storage process. These steps reveal practical gaps before a live job depends on them.
Decide how the tablet and phone will coexist
Site Audit does not automatically synchronise projects between a phone and tablet. Choose one current working device for a project or agree a deliberate transfer process. Restoring a backup replaces the destination app's records rather than merging two devices' projects.
