Painting Snag List Checklist
A useful painting snag list identifies the affected surface and shows the finish under recorded viewing conditions. Give the painter enough context to find each patch without treating a close-up photo as the entire instruction.

Record the surface and viewing conditions
Start with the room, wall or joinery element and the exact position. Note whether the surface was dry, dusty, partly protected or still being worked on. Record the light conditions if they materially affect how the observation appears. A reflection across a wall can make a photograph difficult to interpret later.
Use the project specification, agreed sample or responsible inspector for acceptance decisions. This checklist helps document visible observations; it does not set universal tolerances for paint appearance. Avoid declaring a finish defective solely because an extreme close-up looks uneven.
A practical paint observation checklist
- Identify visible runs, splashes or missed areas, with the affected surface named.
- Record marks on adjacent fittings separately from marks on the painted surface.
- Distinguish unfinished preparation from a finish presented as complete.
- Photograph the room context, then the particular area needing review.
- Note whether furniture, protection or another trade prevents a full view.
- Record a reference to the agreed finish when one is available.
Keep independently repairable observations separate. Paint on a door handle and an unfinished section of wall may need different preparation and checking. Grouping both into “paintwork poor” leaves the recipient guessing what must be addressed.
Example of a painter-ready record
An illustrative entry is: “Meeting 03, corridor-side wall, immediately above skirting beside entry. Unpainted patch visible where the wall meets the trim. Wall presented for review; adjacent furniture obscured the final metre toward the corner.” Add a room photo, a detail photo and a caption explaining the obscured area.
Assign the item to the agreed company, request confirmation of the proposed treatment and record any access dependency. Do not prescribe a coating system from a photograph if that has not been assessed. The painter may need to inspect the substrate or compare the existing finish before confirming the work.
Issue the list and check the return

On the return visit, use the original context view to identify the same surface. Record what was checked and whether the original observation remains visible.
